Are my images uploaded?

No. Images are decoded and re-encoded by your browser's own image engine, on your device. They never leave it, which also makes the tool fast and lets it work offline once the page has loaded.

Which format should I choose?

WebP is the best default for the web: it is widely supported and usually much smaller than JPEG at the same quality. AVIF is smaller still where your browser can encode it. Use JPEG when a site or app only accepts JPEG, and PNG for screenshots or graphics that need sharp edges or transparency.

What quality setting should I use?

Between 70 and 85 suits most photos: files shrink a lot with no visible difference. Use the before and after view to check. Lower settings save more but can blur fine detail and add blockiness around text.

Does it remove location and camera data?

Yes. Re-encoding keeps only the pixels, so EXIF metadata such as GPS location, camera model and timestamps is dropped. That makes compressed photos safer to share publicly.

Why did a file get bigger?

Some images are already well compressed, and converting a small PNG graphic to a photo format can also add size. When the result would be larger than the original in the same format, the tool keeps the original and marks it already optimised.
